The Department of Meteorology has issued an amber warm weather advisory for several parts of the country, warning that the heat index could reach the Caution’ level during the daytime tomorrow (07).

The advisory, issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre at 4.00 p.m. today (06) will be in effect for residents of the North Central and Eastern provinces and the Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Kurunegala, Monaragala and Hambantota districts.

The Department said the heat index — the temperature actually felt by the human body based on a combination of temperature and relative humidity — is expected to rise to cautionary levels at some locations.

Authorities have urged the general public to take precautions, particularly during the hottest parts of the day.

Meanwhile, those working at job sites have been advised to stay hydrated and take frequent breaks in shaded areas, while strenuous outdoor activities should be limited where possible.

The Department has also urged the public to check on elderly and sick persons, while motorists have been reminded never to leave children unattended inside vehicles.

The general public is further advised to seek shade, drink sufficient water and wear lightweight, white or light-coloured clothing to reduce the effects of the heat.
