Thirteen individuals, including a woman, have been arrested by police after allegedly attempting to travel to India by sea.
The group had reportedly attempted to reach India by sea but was turned back to Sri Lanka by Indian customs officials.
Following their return to Sri Lanka, the suspects were taken into custody by officers of Sri Lanka’s Department of Immigration and Emigration and handed over to Kankesanthurai Police for further investigations, yesterday (06).
Police said the group comprised one woman and 12 men.
The suspects are residents of Karunkodithivu, Mampitiya, Medawachchiya, Haldummulla, Wellawaya, Monaragala, Mavadichenai, Balangoda, Trincomalee, Badulla and Pottuvil.
The suspects are currently being detained at the Kankesanturai Police Station and are scheduled to be produced before court today (07).
