The Basnayake Nilame of the historic Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya, Thilina Madhusankha, has announced a decision to discontinue the release of the sacred tusker “Wasana” for ordinary peraheras, except for major historical religious processions such as the Kandy Esala Perahera.

Now 58 years old, Wasana is a revered tusker who is held in deep affection and respect by people across the island.

The Basnayake Nilame stated that numerous requests are received for Wasana to participate in peraheras held in various parts of the country. However, transporting the tusker over long distances by vehicle for such events causes him considerable fatigue and distress, he said.

He further stated that the decision was made with priority given to the health and welfare of the tusker.

Accordingly, Wasana will henceforth be released only for peraheras held at a limited number of major historical religious sites.
