The Parliamentary Select Committee appointed to conduct a comprehensive study into the lack of preparedness to face Cyclone Ditwah recently questioned senior Sri Lanka Police officials who were involved in responding to the disaster.
The officials were questioned when the Committee met at Parliament under the chairmanship of Hon. Minister (Dr.) Nalinda Jayatissa, according to the Department of Communication of Parliament.
Accordingly, several Senior Superintendents of Police and Superintendents of Police from districts affected by Cyclone Ditwah were summoned before the Committee to provide information on the measures taken to respond to the disaster.
Former Member of Parliament Nimal Piyatissa was also summoned before the Committee. He was questioned regarding comments he had made to media concerning the measures taken in response to the cyclone at the time.
The Committee is tasked with examining the country’s preparedness and response to Cyclone Ditwah and submitting a report, along with proposals and recommendations to Parliament.
Members of Parliament serving on the Select Committee also participated in the meeting.
