The Department of Meteorology has issued a warm weather advisory for several areas of the country, warning that the heat index—the temperature felt by the human body—is expected to reach the Caution level in some areas during the daytime tomorrow (08).

The advisory was issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre at 4.00 p.m. today and will be in effect until 4.00 p.m. tomorrow.

The advisory will be in effect for residents of the North Central and Eastern Provinces and in the Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Kurunegala, Monaragala and Hambantota.

According to the Department, the heat index is calculated using relative humidity and maximum temperature and represents the temperature conditions actually felt by the human body.

The Department has advised the general public to take precautions to reduce the risk of heat-related health effects.

Those working at job sites have been advised to stay hydrated and take frequent breaks in shaded areas. Those indoors are urged to check on elderly and sick individuals.

The public has also been advised to limit strenuous outdoor activities, seek shade and drink sufficient water. Wearing lightweight, white or light-coloured clothing is also recommended during periods of warm weather.
