
A woman has been arrested with a stock of fish allegedly caught using explosives during a joint search operation conducted by the Sri Lanka Navy and the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in the Puthumathalan coastal area of Mullaitivu.
The search operation was carried out yesterday (07) by the Sri Lanka Naval Ship (SLNS) ‘Gotabhaya’ of the Eastern Naval Command together with officers from the Mullaitivu District Office of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.
During the operation, authorities inspected a suspicious location where a stock of fish had been stored in the Puthumathalan coastal area, officials said.
More than 3,200 kilograms of fish allegedly caught using explosives were recovered at the location, and a 38-year-old woman was arrested in connection with the incident, officials said.
The suspect, a resident of the Puthukkudiyiruppu area, along with the seized stock of fish, was handed over to the Mullaitivu District Office of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources for further legal action.
