The Federation of University Teachers’ Association (FUTA) stated that university lecturers have decided to engage in a one-day strike tomorrow (09).
FUTA Secretary, Senior Lecturer Charudatta Ilangasinghe, stated that the association had been engaged in trade union action throughout the past week over the severe crises facing the state university system.
He added that the shortage of lecturers, as well as the lack of suitably qualified lecturers at state universities, has become a serious issue, noting that a situation has now arisen where students who sat for the 2025 G.C.E. Advanced Level examination cannot be admitted to state universities.
He further stated that although the President had announced plans to establish 50 new state universities, it is vital to maintain and improve the quality of the existing 17 universities before establishing new institutions.
Charudatta Ilangasinghe also stated that the federation is awaiting discussions on the matter and emphasized that a permanent solution is required to address the issue.
