Consultant Community Physician of National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) Dr. Suraj Perera has stated that around 900 to 1,000 children and adolescents below the age of 19 are diagnosed with cancer annually in Sri Lanka.
He made this statement at a media briefing held at the Health Promotion Bureau today (09) in conjunction with the National Cancer Control Programme.
Dr. Suraj Perera pointed out that the most commonly diagnosed types of cancer are leukemia, lymphoma, brain tumors, bone cancers, and eye cancers.
He further stated that there is a very high possibility of treating cancer if it is detected early and appropriate treatment is provided accordingly.
September is commemorated worldwide as “Childhood Cancer Awareness Month” with the aim of raising awareness about cancers affecting children and adolescents, as well as their treatment.
