Apple has officially pulled back the curtain on the Apple Watch Series 12, introducing a major sensor overhaul, a return to premium ceramic materials, and a swathe of Apple Intelligence-driven health and smart features.
While retaining the same case design as the Series 11, the Series 12 represents a sizeable internal and software overhaul. The new S11 chip now powers the experience, including the headline change: an all-new 'Health Sensing System', the first significant change to the sensing hardware since 2020.
The upgraded optical heart sensor uses larger, power-efficient green LEDs to measure heart rate every five seconds. Apple also claims it now offers the most accurate heart rate sensing among wearables, citing its own study comparing the new hardware with leading devices among 1,000 participants.
It's not just heart rate architecture that gets a boost, though; Apple is also adding a couple of long-awaited software features to better compete with brands making strides in recovery and longevity analysis.
Heart rate variability (HRV) is now sampled up to 24 times more frequently and categorized into 'Recovery HRV' (for daily stress tracking) and 'Overall HRV' (for long-term cardiovascular health). It'll also now feature in the existing Vitals app.
Plus, there are now also 'Readiness' recommendations. Like others in the industry, this cross-references recent activity, training load, vitals, and sleep score to offer insight into the user's capacity for the day ahead.
Similar to how Apple categorizes your night's sleep, this uses a 0-10 score and a recommendation: Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, or Go For It.
Audio Intelligence arrives to challenge AI hardware
Beyond health and workout tracking, the major smart addition is 'Audio Intelligence'—a suite of tools Apple says is designed to help users catch missing context and stay engaged in daily interactions.
That's a pitch similar to what we've heard plenty of dedicated AI hardware brands offer over the past couple of years, with Apple's listening-in features including 'Sound Recognition', 'Live Rewind', 'Siri Recap', and Shazam support.
Live Rewind surfaces the previous 15 seconds of spoken audio as a text snippet on screen, while Siri Recap automatically generates summaries in a new Siri app. Live Rewind can also trigger an audible chime and a visible screen animation while in use.
Sound Recognition is exactly what it says on the tin. To help those who are deaf or hard of hearing, this triggers alerts for emergency sirens, doorbells, or crying babies right on your wrist without a nearby iPhone.
As with all these listening-in features, Apple is keen to stress the privacy boundaries. It notes that the S11 chip's hardware compartment processes the raw audio entirely in isolation and deletes it immediately, without storing raw audio files.
Apple says Siri Recap and Live Rewind arrive in beta later this year, though, so don't expect to see them talked about much in early reviews or at launch.
Finishes, pricing, and availability
The Series 12 also brings back the fan-favorite ceramic finish. Not seen since the Series 6, it's available in Pearl White and Dark Blue, complete with matching ceramic pin closures on Sport Bands.
Everything else in this area is largely the same—the Series 12 is available in 42mm and 46mm case sizes in aluminum, titanium, and ceramic finishes. Aluminum options include Dark Bronze and Light Gold, along with Black and Space Gray, while titanium adds Radiant Gold.
Interestingly, the models now also feature Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says is 60 percent tougher than the Ion-X glass of previous models.
The Apple Watch Series 12 is available for pre-order today starting at $399 / £399, with full retail availability beginning next Friday, September 18th.
