Three Sri Lankan women have been arrested by Customs officers at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) while attempting to smuggle a consignment of cannabis worth approximately Rs. 8 million.
The three women were arrested last night (09) at the ‘Red Channel’ designated for business travellers after arriving at the airport on a flight from Bangkok, Thailand, at around 10.50 p.m.
The suspects, aged 34, 37 and 54, are residents of Colombo 13, Kalpitiya and Colombo 02, Ada Derana reporter said.
Customs officers had discovered approximately 803 grams of cannabis concealed inside several pieces of luggage carried by the women.
The cannabis had been prepared into a paste-like substance and packed into 11 separate parcels wrapped tightly in black cellophane tape to prevent leakage.
The seized consignment has been handed over to officers of the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) at the Katunayake Airport for further investigations.
