Minister of Power and Energy Anura Karunathilaka stated that more than 2,700 gigawatts of power generation capacity are expected to be added to the national grid through solar power, wind power and battery storage during the period from 2027 to 2029.

Speaking in Parliament today (11), the Minister said plans are in place to add 1,392 gigawatts from solar power, 370 gigawatts from wind power and 1,000 gigawatts from battery storage to the grid during this period.

The Minister further stated that electricity generation from rooftop solar installations has increased significantly in recent years, with approximately 2,500 gigawatts currently being generated through such systems.

He noted that instances of surplus electricity generation occur, particularly on Sundays and public holidays, when electricity demand is relatively low.

Accordingly, the Minister explained that certain limitations have to be imposed on solar power generation at times to maintain the stability of the national power grid.

However, he stated that with the introduction of battery storage systems, the Government expects to store excess electricity generated during the daytime and distribute it during nighttime hours in the future.
