The Public Service Commission has approved a request made by the Ministry of Education to provide concessions regarding the efficiency bar examinations required under the Sri Lanka Teacher Service.

Accordingly, teachers who were promoted to Grade I of the Sri Lanka Teachers’ Service between October 23, 2022, and June 30, 2025, will be exempted from the requirement to complete the relevant efficiency bar examinations.

However, the relevant efficiency bar requirement must be completed before the next promotion, it was stated.

A decision has also been taken to exempt officers who were promoted on the condition that they complete the efficiency bar examination applicable to the grade preceding the grade to which they were promoted, from that requirement, subject to completing it before their next promotion.

In addition, officers whose grade promotions fall between June 30, 2025, and the dates on which the efficiency bar examinations applicable to their respective grades are held will also be granted grade promotions without considering the completion of the relevant modules or efficiency bar examinations.

The relevant examinations are scheduled as follows:

  • The First Efficiency Bar Examination will be conducted in accordance with Gazette Extraordinary No. 2494 dated June 19, 2026.

  • The Second Efficiency Bar Examination will be conducted in accordance with Gazette Extraordinary No. 2498 dated July 17, 2026.

  • The Third Efficiency Bar Examination will be conducted in accordance with Gazette Extraordinary No. 2503 dated August 21, 2026.

  • The Ministry of Education is expected to issue a circular in due course, informing all relevant parties of these decisions.

The system of efficiency bar examinations was introduced under the amended Teachers’ Service Minute published in Gazette Extraordinary No. 2444/21 dated July 8, 2025.
