
Five Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) personnel and two civilians have been arrested by Mattala Police for allegedly shooting and killing deer roaming within the premises of Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport and selling the meat to outside parties.
The suspects were apprehended during a special police raid while the Air Force personnel were allegedly attempting to transport the said venison out of the airport premises, officials said.
Police have also taken into custody firearms suspected to have been used in the poaching, along with a vehicle belonging to the SLAF.
Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO) have launched an investigation into the incident, and Mattala Police are also continuing investigations.
