Sri Lankan javelin star Rumesh Tharanga continued his remarkable run of form by winning the men’s javelin throw at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest, Hungary a short while ago, overcoming a field featuring several of the world’s leading throwers.

After a relatively slow start to the event, which got underway at around 9:40 p.m. Sri Lanka time, Tharanga in his third attempt produced a throw of 87.11 metres to move into the lead.

He then delivered his decisive effort in the fourth round, unleashing a massive 91.09-metre throw to strengthen his position at the top of the standings.

Grenada’s Anderson Peters finished second with a throw of 86.18 metres, while Germany’s Julian Weber took third place with 85.89 metres.

Tharanga entered the competition as one of the leading contenders after establishing a world-leading mark of 92.62 metres earlier this year. He also secured the men’s javelin title in this year’s Diamond League campaign.

Germany’s Weber was considered one of Tharanga’s strongest challengers. Weber had thrown 90.40 metres at this year’s European Athletics Championships, setting a new championship record.

However, Sri Lanka’s Tharanga managed to overcome the challenges and managed to clinch the event in Hungary.
