The Local Government Week will commence across the island today (14), with the participation of local government institutions, the Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government Professor A.H.M.H. Abayarathna said.
The six-day programme will run from today until September 19, with the national-level programme launched in Ruwanwella in the Kegalle District, the Minister said.
The programme will be implemented in coordination with all local government institutions across every district.
The Minister said the initiative has been designed to address a wide range of issues affecting the general public, including environmental and health concerns, as well as needs relating to literature and other areas of community life.
Today has been designated as “Mobile Services and Revenue Promotion Day”. Instead of requiring members of the public to visit ministries and Divisional Secretariat offices, officials will visit communities and provide services based on their needs, the Minister said.
Tomorrow (15) has been designated as “Public Utilities and Infrastructure Day”, with programmes planned to maintain existing infrastructure in local areas and introduce new infrastructure where necessary.
September 16 will focus on environmental programmes under the theme “A Plant for Tomorrow and Tree Planting.” The Minister said schoolchildren and young people will be involved in these activities to raise awareness of the importance of environmental conservation.
A number of programmes, including the removal of plastic waste and garbage from the environment, are also scheduled to take place on the day.
September 17 has been designated as “Health, Sanitation and Dengue Prevention Day”. The Ministry plans to conduct dengue prevention programmes with community participation, particularly in preparation for the increased risk of dengue associated with forthcoming rains.
September 18 will be observed as “Literature, Education, Libraries, Welfare and Sports Day”. A range of programmes will be held to appreciate and promote the literary creations of schoolchildren and young people, along with activities aimed at encouraging literary appreciation and enjoyment.
The final day, September 19, will focus on recognising public servants, institutions and community organisations that have provided outstanding services. Programmes will also include the presentation of certificates of recognition and the provision of assistance to beneficiaries.
The Minister of Public Administration said plans have already been prepared to implement a range of community-based programmes aimed at addressing numerous rural and local-level issues while actively involving the public in finding solutions.
