
National List Member of Parliament M.S. Abdul Wahid has resigned from parliament, with effect from today (14).
Abdul Wahid, who represents the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, formally submitted his resignation to the Acting Secretary-General of Parliament, Hansa Abeyratne.
In a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Election Commission, Abeyratne confirmed that Abdul Wahid had tendered his resignation from the office of Member of Parliament, effective September 14.
Following the resignation, the Acting Secretary-General formally informed the Election Commission that a vacancy has arisen in the Tenth Parliament.
The notification was made in terms of Section 64(5) of the Parliamentary Elections Act, No. 1 of 1981.
The Election Commission will now take the necessary steps under the relevant provisions of the law to fill the vacant National List seat.
