
A prison officer was arrested this afternoon (14) for allegedly attempting to smuggle narcotics into Welikada Prison concealed inside his shoes.
The narcotics were discovered during an inspection conducted by prison officials inside the main entrance of Welikada Prison, following information received by authorities.
The suspect is a prison officer attached to Welikada Prison.
During the inspection, officials reportedly found 96 grams of crystal methamphetamine(‘Ice’) and 16.7 grams of heroin concealed inside the shoes worn by the suspect.
After being alerted pertaining to the incident, a team of officers from the Borella Police Station’s Criminal Investigation Unit, led by the Officer-in-Charge, conducted an investigation and arrested the suspect.
The seized drugs have been taken into police custody for further legal proceedings.
