New modules on social cohesion, law and ethics are to be introduced for students in Grades 12 and 13 under the government’s education reforms scheduled for implementation from 2027.

The proposal was discussed at a meeting of the Parliamentary Subcommittee on Education Reforms, chaired by Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.

The reforms also include plans to introduce seven subjects, including History and Aesthetic Studies, for the G.C.E. Ordinary Level examination, while vocational education is to be introduced for students in Grades 10 and 11, according to a statement from the Department of Communication of Parliament.

As part of the initial phase of the General Education Reforms, activity books, teacher guides and modules for Grades 2 and 6 have already been prepared, with teacher training programmes currently underway.

The government is also planning awareness programmes to familiarise stakeholders and the public with the new education reforms.

Meanwhile, a National Preschool Education Policy has been formulated to formalise preschool education. Work is underway on preschool registration, curriculum and teacher-guide preparation, and teacher training.

Deputy Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr. Madura Seneviratne, Members of Parliament and officials participated in the meeting, the Department of Communication of Parliament added.
