The Court of Appeal today (14) ordered that a writ petition filed by the leader of the Sarvajana Balaya, Parliamentarian Dilith Jayaweera challenging a referral by the Colombo Fort Magistrate over alleged contempt of court be taken up for support on September 18.

The petition will be heard before a three-judge bench comprising Court of Appeal President Justice Rohantha Abeysooriya and Justices Chamath Morais and Adithya Patabendige.

The Colombo Fort Magistrate had referred the matter to the Court of Appeal to determine whether MP Jayaweera committed contempt of court during a television interview. The referral was taken up for the second consecutive day today.

Appearing for Sarvajana Balaya leader Jayaweera, President’s Counsel Ali Sabry requested that the interview in question be screened in open court to demonstrate his client’s innocence.

The bench subsequently directed the Registrar of the Court of Appeal to make the necessary arrangements to screen the video recording before the court.

Following consideration of the submissions, the court ordered that the writ petition be taken up before the three-judge bench on September 18.
