A stock of “Kush” cannabis estimated to be worth around Rs. 320 million has been seized after being found inside luggage abandoned near Baggage Belt No. 06 at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), earlier this morning (15).

The haul was seized by officers attached to the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) airport unit.

The narcotics had been packed into 60 airtight packets and concealed inside two pieces of luggage.

Police suspect that the luggage had been brought into Sri Lanka by a passenger who arrived at the BIA yesterday (14) onboard SriLankan Airlines flight UL 405 from Bangkok, Thailand, Ada Derana reporter said.

The passenger is believed to have abandoned the two bags and fled after fearing that he would be arrested at the airport.

The Police Narcotics Bureau has launched an investigation to identify the passenger, with officers reviewing CCTV footage at the airport and obtaining assistance from the airlines.

The seized stock of “Kush” cannabis is scheduled to be produced before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court today.
