Police have arrested three suspects over an alleged plot to abduct and kill an informant who provided information leading to the seizure of 325 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine (‘Ice’) worth over Rs. 5 billion in Kirinda last year.

The suspects were arrested while allegedly hiding in a shop opposite the Lakshmi Devalaya in Sella Kataragama by a special team of the Walana Central Anti Vice Striking Force.

The main suspect has been identified as 41-year-old Maduka Chamara alias Madhuwa, a resident of Wellampitiya and an alleged close associate of organised criminals known as “Angoda Priyankara” and “Ruben.”

Police recovered two machetes allegedly intended for the planned killing, eight grams of heroin and documents relating to a fake number plate fitted to a SUV vehicle resembling a police jeep.

Two other suspects, identified as 38-year-old Nalin and 42-year-old Susantha, were also arrested. Police recovered six grams and 3.2 grams of ‘Ice’ respectively from the two suspects.

Investigators say the suspects had planned to abduct the informant from his residence in Kirinda using a blue jeep fitted with a fake number plate resembling a police vehicle and subsequently set the vehicle on fire.

Police said the alleged plot was linked to a November 2025 drug raid in Kirinda, during which 325 kilograms of ‘Ice,’ eight suspects and six vehicles were seized based on information provided by the informant.

The informant was later allegedly targeted in a road attack on September 5 while travelling towards Kirinda Harbour. He sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment under police protection.

Police said the investigation is continuing to identify other individuals allegedly connected to the plot.
