Businessman sentenced to death for trafficking heroin
A businessman from the Dehiwala area, who was found guilty of possession and trafficking of heroin, has been sentenced to death by the Chilaw High Court today (17).
The suspect was arrested and produced before the court following a special raid conducted by officers attached to the Chilaw Divisional Intelligence Unit in the Anavilundawa area on May 17, 2017.
A total of 211 kilograms and 818 grams of narcotics were seized during the raid. According to a subsequent Government Analyst’s report, the consignment contained 136 kilograms and 99 grams of pure heroin.
The seized consignment was reportedly the largest quantity of narcotics seized from a single individual in Sri Lanka in 2017, with an estimated street value of nearly Rs. 1 billion.
