The Department of Government Information has announced that commuters travelling by train can purchase tickets online.

According to a statement issued by the department, the facility is available through the website www.pravesha.lk, while train tickets can also be purchased via the ‘Pravesha’ mobile app.

Passengers can purchase tickets online by following these steps:

1. Visit pravesha.lk.

2. Add your trip details and complete your payment using a credit or debit card.

3. Get your e-ticket delivered to you via SMS or email.

4. Scan the QR code provided on the e-ticket to validate the ticket at the railway station and on the train.

The facility has been introduced against the backdrop of a 48-hour token strike launched by the Railway Joint Trade Union Alliance over several demands, including the removal of the current General Manager of Railways.

The move comes after train tickets were not being issued at many railway stations due to the ongoing trade union action.

However, despite the strike, trains were observed operating as usual today (17), the statement said.

The Railway Joint Trade Union Alliance commenced the 48-hour token strike at midnight yesterday (16), involving 29 trade unions, including the Sri Lanka Railway Station Masters' Association (SLRSMA), Railway Employees’ Association, Sri Lanka Unprotected Railway Crossing Gatekeepers’ Association and Railway Security Officers’ Association.

The unions launched the trade union action demanding the immediate removal of the current General Manager of Railways, alleging that he had acted arbitrarily without addressing employees’ grievances.

Although train tickets were not issued this morning due to the strike, commuters said that train services were operating as usual.

The Railway Department stated that train services had been scheduled to operate as usual both this morning and this afternoon despite the ongoing strike.

Meanwhile, the SLRSMA, which is participating in the strike, said that it would intensify its trade union action in the future if a solution is not provided to the issues raised, the statement added.
