The token strike initiated by railway trade unions over several demands, including the removal of the General Manager of the Department of Railways, remains in effect today, according to the Sri Lanka Railway Station Masters’ Association (SLRSMA).

The association’s Chairman, Sumeda Somaratne, stated that the trade union action launched yesterday will continue until midnight today.

He further stated that the trade union action was launched due to the lack of a proper response, despite repeated efforts to highlight inefficiencies within the Department of Railways on numerous occasions.

The Railway Station Masters’ Association emphasized that the government must take immediate action on its demands, including the removal of the General Manager.

However, Railway Transport Superintendent Asanka Samarasinghe stated that, despite the ongoing trade union strike, measures have been taken to operate train services as normal today.

Accordingly, he noted that all office trains have been scheduled to operate this morning and evening.

Additionally, plans have been made to operate parcel trains, the Kankesanthurai Intercity train, the Yal Devi train, and the train from Mannar to Colombo today.

The Department of Railways further stated that the night mail train from Kankesanthurai to Colombo has also commenced its journey.
