The Bengal and Delhi Capitals (DC) wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel, who was arrested by police in connection with a criminal offence, has been granted bail. He was accused of cohabitation on the promise of marriage and was thus arrested by the police a month ago. He was also dropped from the Bengal squad for the 2026/27 domestic season.

As per reports, the young cricketer was arrested on several non-bailable charges, including rape and having sexual relations on the promise of marriage. The charges were filed against him on June 23rd, as an FIR was lodged against Abishek Porel at Magra Police Station in Hooghly district, and he was arrested from his home on August 11, Tuesday, after he was found guilty on the charges made against him.

Abishek Porel granted bail

Now, according to reports from ABP Ananda, Abishek Porel has been granted bail by the Calcutta High Court on Thursday, and on Friday he will be released from jail. This is a big relief for the cricketer after spending 36 days in jail on charges of rape and a fake promise of marriage.

Previously, when Abishek denied all the allegations, Dum Dum police arrested him on the order of the High Court. The Court also ordered the police to detain the Bengal & Delhi Capitals cricketer and seize his electronic devices on possible rape charges against him. The order was given to take the complainant's personal devices in order to preserve his privacy and prevent the spreading of false information.

Why was Abishek Porel arrested?

Initially, he was charged under Mogra PS FIR No. 346/2026, which involves non-bailable BNS charges including rape and criminal assault. The medical student accused him of having sexual relationships with her under the promise of marriage and also blackmailed her by threatening to leak private photos.

Then, after the hearing on 11th August, he was arrested, and he was also denied bail on the first attempt on August 14.

As he was taken into custody under Sections 64(1), 66, 69, 74, 75(2), 79, 115(2), 117(2), 124(1), 127(2), 109, 308(2), 351(2), 351(3), 316(2), 318(3), 61(2) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Sections 66E and 72 of the Information Technology Act, according to the police.

Will Abishek Porel make a comeback in cricket?

Now that the 23-year-old is getting bail, he will look to make a comeback in the game and try to get back the reputation that he has lost over this period of time due to the allegations and also being jailed. He will have a difficult time ahead in his career with a black mark on his small career.

Abishek has been decent for the Capitals in the seasons he has played for the IPL franchise; his best season came back in 2024 as he ended up playing all 14 games for DC in IPL 2024. He finished with 327 runs at a strike rate of 159.51 and was DC's third-highest run-scorer. This season, he played four games, scoring 108 runs.
