Rainy weather is expected to continue in several parts of Sri Lanka tomorrow (21), with heavy rainfall of more than 100 millimetres possible in some areas, according to the Department of Meteorology.

The forecast, issued at 2.00 p.m. today (20), said a low-pressure area has formed over the Bay of Bengal, northeast of Sri Lanka, near the Andaman region. Although the system is not expected to directly affect the island, prevailing wind patterns towards the system are expected to maintain rainy conditions, particularly in the southwestern parts of the country.

Showers or thundershowers are expected at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces and in the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts. Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is possible at some locations in these areas, the Met. Department noted.

Several spells of showers may occur in the North-Central Province and the Mannar District, while showers or thundershowers are expected at several places in the Uva Province and in the Batticaloa and Ampara districts after 2.00 p.m. tomorrow.

The Met. Department also warned of fairly strong winds of around 30–40 kmph at times over the western slopes of the Central Hills, North-Central and North-Western provinces, and in the Trincomalee, Hambantota and Matale districts.

Meanwhile, the general public has been advised to take adequate precautions against possible damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
