Water levels in several major rivers across Sri Lanka have risen significantly due to the prevailing rainy weather conditions, according to the Irrigation Department.
Minor flood conditions have been reported at the Glencourse station on the Kelani River and the Panadugama station on the Nilwala River.
The Irrigation Department said river water levels in several areas have reached the “Alert level” due to continued rainfall in the upper catchment areas.
The affected areas include:
- Kelani River: Hanwella, Norwood (Kehelgamu Oya) and Holombuwa (Gurugoda Oya)
- Kalu River: Maguru (Maguru Ganga), Kalawellawa/Millakanda (Kuda Ganga) and Ratnapura
- Gin River: Thawalama and Baddegama
- Mahaweli River: Peradeniya
Meanwhile, several parts of the island have experienced rainfall over the past 12 hours, up to 9:00 p.m. The highest rainfall of 89.6 mm was recorded in Kitulgala.
Havey showers were also reported from Nawalapitiya (81.9 mm), Giriulla (78.4 mm) and Deraniyagala (76.7 mm).
Authorities have urged residents living in low-lying areas near rivers to remain vigilant and exercise caution over the next few hours as water levels could rise further.
