President Anura Kumara Dissanayake says the government is making every possible effort to secure a pardon for Sivarasa Anojan, a Sri Lankan national who has been sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia.
President Dissanayake said he met Anojan’s parents at the Presidential Secretariat this morning (21) and briefed them on the steps being taken by the government to assist their son.
He said the government is intervening through both legal and diplomatic channels and will make a formal written diplomatic appeal to the King of Saudi Arabia seeking a pardon for Anojan.
The President also informed the family of the official measures already taken by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including the submission of appeals to the relevant authorities.
He assured Anojan’s parents that the government is closely and continuously monitoring the progress of efforts to secure a pardon.
