Residents evacuated following major landslide in Maskeliya estate
Residents of estate housing located above a major landslide within a section of the Gartmore estate in Maskeliya, have been instructed to evacuate to safer locations with immediate effect.
The landslide, triggered by heavy rainfall, has buried a large section of the tea estate above the Maussakelle Reservoir and completely blocked the main access road with earth and rocks.
Maskeliya Police OIC Chief Inspector Sarath Pushpakumara said estate management had been instructed to relocate families living in at-risk houses to safer areas.
The National Building Research Institute (NBRI) has been notified to conduct further assessments and monitor the situation.
