Cabinet Spokesman Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa stated that the government is currently considering a revision of fuel prices in Sri Lanka amid rising oil prices in the global market.
Minister Jayatissa said discussions are underway on the possibility of providing a subsidy to the public without passing the full impact of the increase in global fuel prices on to consumers.
"We are re-examining this fuel price increase to see if the government can provide a subsidy so that the entire burden doesn't fall on the public.”
Accordingly, the government is considering allocating a portion of funds available in the General Treasury to provide a subsidy to offset part of the increase in fuel prices, the Minister said.
However, he said the amount of the proposed subsidy has not yet been determined.
The Minister further said the government always seeks to provide some relief to the public rather than passing on the full increase in global market fuel prices.
Minister Jayatissa said such measures would also help maintain the prices of goods and services at a manageable level.
