The Department of Meteorology says the depression over the Northwest Bay of Bengal, northeast of Sri Lanka, has intensified into a deep depression.
Although the system is not expected to have a direct impact on Sri Lanka, rainy conditions are likely to continue in the southwestern parts of the island due to wind flow towards the system.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Northwestern provinces, as well as in Galle and Matara districts. Heavy rainfall exceeding 100mm is likely in some areas.
Several spells of showers are also expected in the North Central Province and Mannar District.
Strong winds of around 40–50 kmph may occur at times over the western slopes of the Central Hills, North Central and Northwestern provinces, as well as in Trincomalee, Hambantota and Matale districts.
The public is advised to take necessary precautions to minimize the risk of damage from localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
