Heavy showers exceeding 100mm are likely in some parts of southwestern Sri Lanka today (24) as rainy conditions continue under the influence of a deep depression moving across the eastern coast of India, the Department of Meteorology said.

The Met. Department, in its latest weather forecast said showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Northwestern Provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts today.

Heavy showers above 100mm are likely at some places in these areas.

Meanwhile, the deep depression over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal is currently crossing the North Andhra Pradesh and adjoining South Odisha coasts of India, moving west-northwestwards.

Although the system is not expected to have a direct impact on Sri Lanka, the Met. Department said prevailing rainy conditions in the southwestern parts of the island are expected to continue due to the wind flow towards the system.

A few showers are also expected in the North Central Province and the Mannar District.

Meanwhile, strong winds of around 40–50 kmph may occur at times over the western slopes of the Central Hills, North Central and Northwestern Provinces and in the Trincomalee, Hambantota and Matale districts.

The general public has been urged to take adequate precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
