Minor flooding is likely to occur within the next 24 hours in low-lying areas of the Gin Ganga valley, the Irrigation Department warned after issuing an Amber flood warning.
The warning has been issued after significant heavy rainfall was recorded across the catchment areas of the Gin Ganga River Basin, with rainfall continuing.
The Irrigation Department said an analysis of water levels recorded at river gauging stations, together with prevailing rainfall conditions, indicates the possibility of a minor flood situation within the next 24 hours.
The areas at risk include low-lying parts of the Gin Ganga valley in the Thawalama, Nagoda, Baddegama and Welivitiya-Divithura Divisional Secretariat Divisions.
Residents in these areas have been urged to exercise extreme caution, while motorists travelling through affected areas have also been advised to remain vigilant.
The relevant Disaster Management authorities have also been requested to take necessary precautionary measures as the situation develops.
