The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) is scheduled to stage a protest and demonstration this morning (24) against the proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.
The protest is scheduled to begin at 9.00 a.m. at the Polduwa Junction in Battaramulla.
SJB General Secretary Parliamentarian Ranjith Madduma Bandara said the demonstration is being held in opposition to the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, which the party claims is paving the way for an authoritarian path. He also called on the public to join the protest.
Meanwhile, the Free Action Centre for the Protection of Democracy has decided not to participate in today’s planned demonstration.
In a statement, the movement said the decision was taken in consideration of the prevailing controversial circumstances.
The movement said its objective had been to bring together all opposition political parties, groups and democratic forces on a common platform and build a broad and strong public movement to safeguard the democratic rights of the people.
It also expressed regret over the decision not to proceed with the protest as originally planned.
