Spill gate of Upper Kotmale Reservoir opened amid heavy rain
One spillway gate of the Upper Kotmale Reservoir was opened today (24) due to heavy rains in the reservoir’s catchment areas, reservoir engineers said.
Heavy rains have been falling in the Upper Kotmale catchment areas since early this morning, resulting in an increase in the reservoir’s water level.
Officials also warned that if heavy rainfall continues, the remaining spillway gates could open automatically.
The Disaster Management Centre also urged residents living along both banks of the Kotmale River downstream of the reservoir dam to remain vigilant and exercise caution.
