Former Chairman of the state-owned Lanka Mineral Sands Limited, Udeni Dassanayake, has been arrested by the Bribery Commission over allegations that he caused a loss of approximately Rs. 30 million to the state by recruiting employees without following proper procedures.
He is accused of recruiting employees for the post of ‘casual labourer’ during 2023 and 2024, outside the standard recruitment procedure and in excess of the approved cadre of the company.
The Bribery Commission stated that, by causing a sum of Rs. 34,438,650.42 to be paid in salaries to these casual labourers from the time of their recruitment to date, he had conferred an unlawful advantage on those individuals, thereby committing an offence of corruption.
The suspect was arrested by investigating officers of the Bribery Commission today (25) at around 9:25 a.m. and is scheduled to be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court.
