An Amber-level warm weather advisory has been issued for several parts of the country, with the heat index expected to reach the ‘Caution’ level in some areas tomorrow (28), the Department of Meteorology said.

The advisory, issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre at 4:00 p.m. today (27) will be in effect in the North Central and Eastern provinces and Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Monaragala and Hambantota.

The Met. Department said the temperature felt by the human body could increase to the ‘Caution’ level in some locations during the daytime.

The heat index is calculated using relative humidity and maximum temperature and indicates the level of heat experienced by the human body. It should not be considered a forecast of the maximum air temperature, the department said.

The general public has been advised to take precautions to minimise the effects of the heat.

Those working outdoors have been advised to remain hydrated and take frequent breaks in shaded areas, while people have been urged to limit strenuous outdoor activities and seek shade where possible.

The Met. Department also advised the general public to check on elderly and sick individuals and warned motorists never to leave children unattended inside vehicles.

People have been advised to wear lightweight, white or light-coloured clothing during the daytime.
