Provincial and zonal education officials have been briefed on the proposed new education reforms and the National Curriculum Framework at a programme held at the Ministry of Education premises.

The programme was conducted with the aim of raising awareness among education officials at provincial and zonal levels about the proposed reforms and the changes outlined in the National Curriculum Framework.

Officials were provided with detailed information on the National Curriculum Framework, which was prepared by the National Institute of Education under the direction of the National Education Commission as part of the new education reform process.

It was also revealed that the document is expected to be made available to education officials for reference following approval by the Cabinet of Ministers.

According to the proposed National Curriculum Framework, the school day is expected to run from 7.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m., with each lesson period limited to 40 minutes. Officials were also briefed on the proposed number of subjects for the G.C.E. Ordinary Level, including subjects such as Aesthetic Studies and History, as well as proposed changes to the assessment system.

The programme also covered proposed vocational subjects for Grades 10 and 11. For Grades 12 and 13, officials were briefed on new subject areas proposed under the reforms, including social cohesion, law and ethics, career guidance and foreign languages.

Additionally, updates were provided on school infrastructure and digital equipment development projects being undertaken as part of the education reforms.

Officials were also briefed on provincial-level teacher training programmes, the preparation and distribution of educational modules, and the current progress of preparations for implementing the new education reforms in 2027.
