President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has congratulated Sri Lankan javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage on winning the gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, describing the achievement as a source of pride for the entire nation.

In a message posted on X, President Dissanayake extended his congratulations and best wishes to Pathirage, while encouraging the athlete to continue his pursuit of Olympic gold.

The President also said the government remains committed to supporting Pathirage and other Sri Lankan athletes as they pursue success on the international stage.

“Keep reaching for the skies, Rumesh – the nation is fully behind you!” the President said.

Pathirage secured the men’s javelin throw gold medal at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium with a best throw of 88.55 metres.

He initially took the lead with an 88.33-metre throw in his third attempt before improving his mark to 88.55 metres in his final attempt.

India’s Yashvir Singh won the silver medal with a throw of 84.72 metres, while compatriot Rohit Yadav claimed the bronze with 84.35 metres.
Sri Lanka’s Sumedha Ranasinghe finished sixth in the event with a throw of 78.08 metres.

Pathirage’s victory marks Sri Lanka’s first gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games.

Sri Lanka has also secured a silver medal in the women’s cricket event at the Games.
