Apple is apparently working on a new type of smart home security camera, but don't expect it to function like the typical cameras found in homes.
Instead of recording or streaming video, the device could use AI to interpret its surroundings and send users text descriptions of events. This is said to be part of a broader Apple project to develop a complete home ecosystem powered by Siri AI.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman-who discussed the product in the first episode of the ‘Power On’ podcast-the camera is part of Apple’s wider push into the smart home market. He stated that Apple is developing a new smart home ecosystem and that the camera is being created under the codename J450. It is expected to work in tandem with the J490 smart home display, a device from the company that has already been rumoured to exist.
Apple’s smart home camera could monitor without recording
So, how does a security camera work without showing you video? That’s where AI comes in. Gurman notes that the camera could operate at a very low frame rate and use an image sensor to analyse what is happening inside and around the house. The idea is for the camera to analyse what it sees directly on the device, without sending video or images to the cloud.
The concept is similar to Sony’s IMX500 image sensors, which are capable of processing visual information using AI without needing to send captured images elsewhere. This could also help Apple address one of the biggest concerns surrounding smart home cameras: privacy.
The camera could use facial recognition to identify who has entered a room or detect activity around the home. However, there is a key detail: you won't get a video feed to watch later. As Gurman put it: "You won't get anything other than text descriptions." For instance, instead of opening an app and watching a recording of someone entering your living room, you might simply receive a text description informing you that someone has entered the room.
Essentially, the camera could understand what is happening without becoming yet another device that constantly records your home.
The camera in question is also part of a broader smart home plan from Apple. The company is rumoured to be launching a smart home control hub with a screen measuring around 6 inches, designed to sit on a countertop or be wall-mounted.
This device is expected to focus primarily on AI-powered Siri while also controlling smart home appliances, playing music, managing video calls, and displaying photos.
Apple could unveil a smart home control hub alongside a new HomePod mini and an upgraded Apple TV. Consequently, the launch scheduled for October 13 could signal a more determined push by Apple into the smart home market.
As of now, Apple has not officially confirmed the camera or its broader product plans. Until the company reveals details about these items in the coming days, we recommend treating this information with caution.
