The derailed express train operating from Peradeniya to Colombo Fort is currently being re-railed, the Department of Railways said.
Railways Traffic Superintendent Asanka Samarasinghe said train services along the Upcountry Railway Line have been temporarily suspended due to the derailment.
He said work is also underway to restore the affected section of track to a condition suitable for train operations.
Samarasinghe said the derailment is believed to have occurred following rainfall in the area over the past two days.
He added that authorities hope to resume Upcountry railway services as soon as possible, depending on the progress of the re-railing work.
“We hope to operate office trains in the evening, but that decision will depend on the re-railing of the train. At present, we cannot say for certain whether this will be possible. The re-railing work is currently underway. We will have to bring the derailed train to Colombo and assess whether it is fit for operation,” he said.
