Eight Indian nationals have been arrested by officers of the Thalangama Police for allegedly engaging in illegal online gambling for money.
Police said an investigation was launched on October 4 following a tip-off that a group of individuals were staying at a residence in the Thalawathugoda area and engaging in illegal online gambling using computers and mobile phones.
Acting on a search warrant obtained from the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court, officers from the Criminal Records Division, the Computer Crimes Investigation Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), and the Police Tourist Division searched the house yesterday (05).
Eight foreign nationals staying at the residence were arrested along with six computers, 39 mobile phones and several other computer-related devices.
The suspects, aged between 22 and 51, are Indian nationals, police said.
Further investigations are being conducted by the Thalangama Police.
