
The Sri Lanka Cricket Bill on Cricket Governance and Administration, which proposes to overhaul the governance framework of the sport, and the Protection of the State from Terrorism Bill, which seeks to repeal the Prevention of Terrorism Act, were presented to the Parliament today.
The Sri Lanka Cricket Bill, presented by the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sunil Kumara Gamage seeks to establish Sri Lanka Cricket as the statutory body responsible for the governance, control, regulation, promotion, development and administration of cricket in Sri Lanka.
The Bill proposes to promote the development of cricket based on the principles of good governance, integrity, transparency, accountability, inclusivity and equal opportunity.
It also seeks to safeguard the welfare of all participants in the sport and protect cricket from corruption and other improper activities.
In addition, the Bill provides for the incorporation of Sri Lanka Cricket, sets out its powers and functions, and makes provision for matters connected with or incidental to its establishment and operations.
Meanwhile, the Protection of the State from Terrorism Bill, presented by the Minister of Justice and National Integration, Attorney-at-Law Harshana Nanayakkara seeks to strengthen the legal framework for protecting Sri Lanka and its people from acts of terrorism, terrorism-related offences and other specified acts constituting terrorism, whether committed within or outside Sri Lanka.
The proposed legislation also seeks to prevent the territory of Sri Lanka and its people from being used in the preparation of acts of terrorism outside the country.
It further provides for the detection, identification, apprehension, arrest, detention, investigation, prosecution and punishment of persons who commit acts of terrorism or other offences related to terrorism.
The Bill also proposes to repeal the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act, No. 48 of 1979, and provides for matters connected with or incidental to its implementation.
