A significant number of HIV cases reported in Sri Lanka have been identified among people addicted to drugs, Minister of Health Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said.
Speaking at the weekly Cabinet media briefing today (6), the Health Minister said available data also indicate that HIV is more prevalent among men than women.
He said 874 new HIV cases were reported in Sri Lanka in 2025, adding that the number of cases reported so far this year has not yet surpassed last year's figure.
However, the Minister said there are concerns that the number could increase by the end of the year.
According to Minister Jayatissa, HIV cases have been reported at higher levels among drug users, while cases of hepatitis B have also been identified among the same group.
He said authorities have taken steps to raise awareness among relevant groups about the risks associated with drug use and the spread of HIV.
Meanwhile, Consultant Community Physician Dr. Sathya Herath, a specialist in sexually transmitted diseases, recently said the number of HIV cases reported in Sri Lanka has been increasing year-on-year.
She noted that Colombo and Gampaha have recorded comparatively higher numbers of HIV cases.
Minister Jayatissa also raised concerns over parties allegedly organized through social media where drugs are consumed, saying such gatherings could potentially contribute to the spread of HIV.
“Certain groups are gathering through social media and holding parties where drugs are being used. Police conduct raids on some of these gatherings, and there is a belief that these activities could be connected to the issue,” he said.
The Health Minister urged parents, adults and young people to remain vigilant about the issue, while emphasizing that Sri Lanka's situation is not comparable to the severe HIV crisis seen in some African countries.
“Even one additional new case is something we are concerned about,” he added.
