Former Director of the State Intelligence Service (SIS), retired Major General Suresh Sallay was discharged from the Colombo National Hospital today (6) and taken back into the custody of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) this afternoon.
Suresh Sallay had been receiving medical treatment at the Colombo National Hospital while in CID custody.
The development came after the Colombo Fort Magistrate issued summons for the 10 doctors treating Sallay to appear before court today.
Appearing before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court, the 10-member medical panel informed the court that Major General Suresh Sallay, who had been receiving treatment for more than 100 days, was medically fit to be discharged from hospital.
Following the medical panel's report, Additional Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris informed the court that Sallay would be taken back into CID custody later today.
Sallay was arrested by the CID after being named as a suspect in investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks.
The CID subsequently obtained approval to detain him for 90 days for questioning.
During his detention, Sallay began a hunger strike, alleging that he had been subjected to inhumane treatment.
His health condition later deteriorated, resulting in his admission to the Colombo National Hospital, where he remained under medical care for more than 100 days.
Sallay’s wife, Manori Sallay, and his mother had previously written to the President requesting that his detention order not be extended after the initial 90-day period.
In their letters, they had requested that Suresh Sallay be remanded instead and that further investigations be conducted while he remained in remand custody.
