Speaker of House Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne today (06) endorsed the Promotion of Export Agriculture (Amendment) Bill, which has now been enacted as the Promotion of Export Agriculture (Amendment) Act, No. 24 of 2026.
The Bill was presented to Parliament on August 7, 2026, by the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation.
The legislation amends the Promotion of Export Agriculture Act, No. 46 of 1992, updating its legal and administrative provisions relating to export agricultural crops.
Among the key amendments is the restructuring of administrative positions under the Act. The designation of “Director” will be replaced with “Director-General”, while new designations including “Additional Director-General,” “Director,” “Deputy Director” and “Assistant Director” have been introduced.
The amendments also revise the definition of an “export agricultural crop” to include crops identified as having export potential, in addition to their use for domestic consumption.
However, the revised definition excludes specified crops, including paddy, vegetables, fruits, root crops and certain other food crops, as well as plantation crops.
With the Speaker’s endorsement, the amended legislation has formally come into effect as the Promotion of Export Agriculture (Amendment) Act, No. 24 of 2026.
