The “Janathawadi Joint Opposition” has stated that it does not condone the removal of Venerable Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero’s saffron robes under any circumstances.
The position was outlined in a special statement issued by the political group, led by former minister Prof. G. L. Peiris, to clarify its stance on the matter.
The statement emphasizes that action concerning Buddhist monks should be taken in accordance with the traditions and disciplinary rules established within the Buddha Sasana.
Accordingly, the Janathawadi Joint Opposition stresses that prison authorities must always respect the traditions and customs of Buddhism.
The statement also notes that the group’s policy is to safeguard the right of the Most Venerable Mahanayake Theros (Chief Prelates) of the Three Nikayas to exercise authority over the discipline of Buddhist clergy.
According to the Vinaya Pitaka, the statement says, only the Nikaya to which a monk belongs has the authority to disrobe that member of the clergy.
The statement, issued under the signature of Professor G. L. Peiris, Convener of the Janathawadi Joint Opposition, further asserts that no external party or individual has the authority to disrobe a Buddhist monk.
It describes the decision to disrobe Gnanasara Thero and make him wear prison attire as controversial, adding that widespread protests have emerged in response to what it characterizes as a rash and arbitrary action.
The Janathawadi Joint Opposition also points out that Article 9 of the Constitution accords Buddhism the foremost place.
The statement concludes by emphasizing that all parties must immediately cease any arbitrary actions concerning Buddhism.
