Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) today announced the appointment of Kusal Mendis as the new Test captain of the national men’s team.
The decision was taken by the Selection Committee at a meeting held today at SLC headquarters, it said.
The upcoming two-match Test series in Pakistan will be the wicketkeeper-batter’s first assignment as Test captain.
Mendis, who is currently Sri Lanka’s ODI and T20I skipper, has represented Sri Lanka in 75 Test matches and a total of 343 international matches across all three formats.
Earlier today, SLC announced that Dhananjaya de Silva has stepped down from the Test captaincy with immediate effect.
He has stepped down from Test captaincy saying it is time for the next generation to take over, while confirming his availability to continue playing for the national team.
“It’s my genuine opinion that the mantle should go down to the next generation,” de Silva said in a letter addressed to the Selection Committee.
De Silva further confirmed that he remains available to represent Sri Lanka as a player.
