The Federation of University Teachers’ Associations (FUTA) has stated that it will take steps to further intensify trade union action, as no satisfactory solutions have been provided to the issues and challenges facing the state university system.
Commenting on the matter, FUTA Media Spokesperson Senior Lecturer Charudatta Ilangasinghe stated that although these issues have been discussed over the past two years, no adequate solutions have been introduced.
He pointed out that the state university system is currently facing numerous serious challenges and that the quality of public education is deteriorating significantly due to the departure of highly qualified academic staff and the lack of new recruitments.
He further noted that discussions had been held with the Prime Minister and the Minister of Education in an effort to resolve the prevailing issues; however, these discussions had failed to produce any satisfactory outcomes.
Accordingly, Senior Lecturer Charudatta Ilangasinghe stated that letters had been submitted to the President and the Deputy Minister of Finance approximately two weeks ago, requesting discussions on university funding allocations, infrastructure facilities, and issues affecting students. However, no response or resolution has been received to date.
