President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has stated that the situation in which influential individuals escaped the law while ordinary citizens faced legal action has now come to an end.
Addressing a public rally in Nikaweratiya today (11), the President said it had been established that no individual or place was beyond the reach of the law.
“There is a saying that the law is like a spider’s web. Some people believed that the law would never reach them. Small insects get caught in the web, while the bigger ones break through it and escape.
“There was a perception in this country that the law could not reach certain individuals. When the law approached them, it would be burned. That situation has now come to an end in Sri Lanka. If anyone believed that the law could not reach them, we are now proving that there is no place the law cannot reach and no individual beyond its reach,” the President said.
The President also noted that the ongoing legal action had created a situation in which prison-related developments warranted a separate news segment.
“These days, we need a separate segment for prison news. One news alert comes in, and within ten minutes, another follows. We also wonder who it is this time,” he said.
Commenting on the situation in the Middle East, President Dissanayake said the Government had maintained an independent foreign policy without submitting to pressure from any party.
He said the Government had rejected a request from the United States to land military aircraft in Sri Lanka, as well as a request from Iran for its warships to arrive in the country.
He further noted that Sri Lanka’s decisions regarding the Iranian ships had received international recognition.
